When the winter chill sets in and the state is blanketed in a serene layer of snow, Wisconsin’s hidden gem transforms into a wonderland waiting to be explored. Door County is a winter haven perfect for visitors of all ages. Recently, we sat down with two long-time February timeshare owners at the Rushes to learn what makes Door County the best winter getaway in Wisconsin. Here are a few of their insights so you can start planning your getaway at the Rushes!

Meet Cathy and Mike

There’s no place like home, but for Cathy and Mike, a couple from Wausau, Wisconsin, their winter timeshare at the Rushes Wilderness Resort in Door County comes pretty close. Retired carpenter Mike and pediatric nurse practitioner Cathy have found their perfect winter escape, just a little over two hours from home, in the tranquil beauty of Door County.

Having initially bought their first timeshare week over twelve years ago, their love for the quieter pace of the winter season at the Rushes led them to acquire more time. Now, Cathy and Mike look forward to their annual two weeks in February at our gorgeous wooded retreat.

Why they fell in love with Wisconsin winter getaways

Of all the places to vacation, why opt for the Rushes in February? Well, for Cathy and Mike, it’s all about the tranquility of the winter season. With the absence of summer crowds, the couple relishes the peaceful quiet, the leisurely walks along snow-dusted trails, ice-fishing expeditions on Green Bay, and exhilarating cross-country skiing in the Logerquist Wilderness Preserve. All these activities are supplemented by the amenities at the Rushes welcome center, like its soothing hot tub or irresistible pool table and ping pong for the grandkids.

A place for generations of family memories

One of the most endearing aspects of the Rushes resort is its ability to cater to their extended family. With three children and a growing number of grandchildren, their timeshare provides a cherished family spot where everyone can enjoy each other’s company. On occasion, the family becomes so large that they rent an additional unit. But, no matter the size of the gathering, the ambiance remains warm and comfortable, akin to a home away from home.

Their timeshare at the Rushes Wilderness Resort has also trickled down to the next generation. Their children have caught the Door County bug, choosing to spend time at the resort, whether it’s a long weekend or an entire week.

Family on Winter Trail

Neighbors who feel like family

Cathy and Mike are not just visitors at the Rushes but part of a vacation community. One thing you won’t experience with other winter cabin rentals is the warm, “neighborly” feeling. The couple has formed a connective thread with the place and its people by recognizing faces at the front desk, catching up with familiar neighbors, and volunteering during their ‘work week’ at the resort’s non-profit wilderness reserve.

The Benefits of Owning at the Rushes Resort

Cathy and Mike mentioned that there are benefits to timeshare ownership at the Rushes.

  • Ease of Planning: the consistent time and place make it easier for families and groups to plan their getaway to Door County.
  • The feeling of belonging: yearly visits let you truly know and understand the larger community and activities.
  • The feeling of community: owners gain a new set of “neighbors” by connecting with fellow timeshare owners.
  • Making a difference: as owners, you are, well, an owner. Your ideas and insights help the Rushes staff meet both your and your fellow neighbors vision of their resort community.

The ability to “unplug” and “plug-in”

Cathy and Mike’s family appreciate that the Rushes Resort perfectly balances relaxation and connectivity. For those needing to check in with work, like their son-in-law, the resort offers wifi and a fully equipped business center, allowing a seamless blend of work and vacation.

Cathy and Mike love that they find endless opportunities to capture the beauty of this winter paradise. From sunrise to sunset, the changing light plays magic on the snowy landscapes, creating moments that are simply breathtaking. They especially love going to the bay side of Lake Michigan and capturing the ice shelves on the frozen lake. Mother Nature creates its own ice festival that is truly something to behold.

Invigorating Outdoor Adventures

Winter at the Rushes isn’t just about scenic views; it’s also a playground for adventure seekers of all ages. Whether you’re a thrill-seeker or prefer a more laid-back pace, there’s something for everyone.

You’ll Always Be Warm At The Rushes

Winter in Wisconsin is always a toss-up when it comes to weather. After a long day of attending winter festivals and hiking through the snow, our owners and renters love relaxing next to a fire pit by Kangaroo Lake. You can even get s’mores supplies from the front desk! If the weather is just too chilly to be outside, the welcome center is a great option for swimming or lounging in the hot tub or suana. Feeling too cozy to leave your unit? Cathy and Mike love curling up next to the fire place with a good book using the firewood we supply!

Seasonal Culinary Experiences

Cathy and Mike are particularly fond of all of the dining options in Door County that are offered year-round. They note that many restaurants have limited hours in the off-season, so they recommend researching a restaurant’s hours beforehand. However, they emphasize that there is never a shortage of places to grab a delicious bite. In fact, they always joke that they want to visit one year without bringing any food and eat out at a different restaurant for each meal. With all of Door County’s mouth-watering options, it can easily be done! The Coyote Roadhouse is just a snowshoe hike away! (Image at right)
